Vegie Garden Is Done!

When I was about 13 years old, I knew I wanted to live in a house close to the beach with a garden big enough to grow vegies and have a few chooks. Chad and I have lived in a handful of houses now, as we moved interstate, then back again, then around a bit until we landed here. The other houses we have lived in weren't "forever homes" so we could never really get stuck into the garden like we so badly wanted to. Now however we can finally do it and it is really exciting! When we first looked through this place and I noticed the already half established vegie garden and room for chooks I had my heart set on it. I could see us here, it felt like home the instant we stepped in the front door.
Last weekend, we spent a full two days getting the vegie beds in and things planted. It was hard work and my back is still aching. It was so worth it though. We have planted zucchini, beetroot, celery, squash, rhubarb, tomatoes, cucumber, carrots, raddish, lemon grass and spring onions. I can see myself getting a little obsessed with this : )  I am really excited about sharing this with the kids, teaching them where food comes from and how to look after it so we can enjoy it for a really long time. I think it's so important for children to get out in the fresh air and get their hands dirty, my girls absolutley LOVE digging for worms and bugs and slugs. The only catch though is that I am forever washing mountains of clothes as they get covered in dirt and mud most days! Here's a few before and after pics of our new vegie garden.
Before (it was full of weeds)

After two full days of work we now have four beds!
